a man had just said he loved her

&

she was become

when he said it

it sounded across the lake

&

back again

she heard the hollow echo

beneath the words

&

she was become

soul , less earth , bound flesh

&

bone beneath the lake

The above is a poem primarily about the creation of an identity in a relationship that is not your base identity. It’s inspired by abusive relationships, and the feeling of helplessness one can have looking in on those relationships.

The focus of the poem is in the relationships between words. The title is meant to separate the entire narrative arc of the poem. The state of being DEfined, and DEcompounded; that is, to be created by another person and broken down to your original state after that person.
